Buying a boat is one thing; handling it with confidence is another. A crosswind as you come alongside, current at the exit of a lock, a crowded dock on a Saturday afternoon: these are the real situations we work through together, on your boat, in the conditions you actually navigate. It is the fastest way to learn, because every manoeuvre you practise transfers directly - it is your helm, your propeller and your marina.
As former commander of the Ottawa Valley squadron of the Canadian Power and Sail Squadrons (2011-2016), I taught boating safety, VHF radio, marine GPS and chart reading to hundreds of boaters across the Gatineau and Ottawa region. My approach is calm, practical and free of judgment: the goal is to make you independent and in control, not to impress you.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need a Pleasure Craft Operator Card before the lesson?
Yes. The Operator Card required by Transport Canada remains mandatory to operate a powered boat in Canada. My practical lessons do not replace it - they complete it. The card gives you the theory; I give you the reflexes at the dock and on the water.
Is the lesson given on my boat or yours?
On yours, ideally. It is your helm station, your engines and your marina that you need to master. It is also a good opportunity to review your safety equipment and your docking habits.
How long is a session?
A typical session runs two to three hours - long enough to progress, short enough to stay sharp. Most boaters gain real independence within two or three sessions. A personalized plan is proposed after our first meeting.
Can my spouse or children take part?
Absolutely, and I recommend it. A second crew member who can dock, anchor and use the VHF is a major safety asset. Family sessions are among the most effective.
Are lessons available in English?
Yes. Lessons are offered in English and French throughout the Gatineau, Ottawa and Thousand Islands area.
